Developing Leadership for Global Health

A workshop for students, researchers and practitioners pursuing influential and impactful careers in Global Health.

Time & Date: 2pm-5:30pm, 12 June 2012

Venue: LR3, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge

The Humanitarian Centre invites students and early-career researchers and practitioners to spend an afternoon exploring how they can be strong and creative leaders in the field of global health.

Jaideep Prahbu, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business & Enterprise, will train participants to seek "jugaad innovation"--improvised solutions born from ingenuity and resourcefulness--for global health, and look to emerging markets and developing countries for innovative leadership.

Andrew Jenkins, head of BRAC's impact evaluation unit, will explore the importance of developing leadership at the community level to address health crises. Drawing from decades of  experience in water & disaster management on the highly vulnerable Bangladeshi coastal zone, he will help participants identify and support local leaders to solve complex problems.  BRAC is the world's largest development NGO and Andrew will be joining us from a major donor signing with DFID & AusAID in London, so don't hesitate to engage with him on leadership in donor relations & policy as well.

From the Univeristy of Botswana, Professor Alinah Segobye, will speak about what leadership means in a field that is inherently multicultural. Learning how to contextualise leadership can help to understand when appropriate leadership is more about listening, adapting and supporting than "taking the lead."

Lastly, we are delighted to offer workshop participants the opportunity for a private audience with Dr Ndwapi Ndwapi, Head of the Office of Strategy Management in Botswana’s Ministry of Health, who will share his experiences of "everyday leadership," and how he has enacted his philosophy of leadership in his notable career.

The workshop will be followed by an evening discussion on "Global Health Leadership and Mangement"--which will examine how leadership and management concepts have been put into practice to affect positive health outcomes in the "Health Leadership and Management Development Programme," run jointly by Botswana's Ministry of Health and Addenbrooke's Abroad.  For more information about this event and to register, please visit: http://globalhealthleadership.eventbrite.com/

The Humanitarian Centre is grateful to Addenbrooke's Abroad and Managing for Development for their support of this workshop.
